‘Young Thug on Trial’ Documentary Coming in 2027 About YSL Case

A 90-minute documentary called Young Thug on Trial should land on Netflix in 2027. It covers the racketeering trial of Young Thug, whose real name is Jeffery Williams. No exact release date is set.

Judge Paige Whitaker, who ran the trial, talked about the project in an interview published Tuesday, Oct. 13 by ClassE . She said the filmmakers interviewed her and that the film is meant to come out next year. She added that an exclusivity clause she signed with the crew bars her from saying more about the case until the film is out.

Shianne Brown directs. Passion Docs produces. Kari Lia and Hamish Fergusson serve as executive producers.

After the interview came out, a post from Kurrco on X shared the film’s description. “Major feature documentary covering the extraordinary rise and trial of Jeffery Williams, aka Young Thug, and his band of brothers from the streets of Atlanta,” the post reads. “Prosecutors set out to prove that he and his music label were actually a criminal street gang. Police arrested Young Thug in May 2022 as part of an indictment that named 28 defendants. Fulton County prosecutors claimed he helped start a criminal street gang known as Young Slime Life, or YSL. His music label goes by Young Stoner Life.

Prosecutors pointed to songs to back up their claims. Defense attorneys pushed back, arguing that creative work used as evidence could sway jurors against the defendants. That clash turned the case into a piece of a bigger debate over rap lyrics in court.

On Oct. 31, 2024, Young Thug pleaded guilty to one gang charge, three drug charges, and two gun charges, according to the Associated Press . He pleaded no contest to racketeering conspiracy and one more gang charge. No sentencing deal with prosecutors came with his pleas. The judge’s sentence let him walk free but gave 15 years of probation.

The trial didn’t stop after his plea. On Dec. 3, 2024, a jury handed down verdicts for the two defendants still standing. Deamonte Kendrick, who raps as Yak Gotti, was found not guilty on every charge. Shannon Stillwell was convicted of a gun-possession charge but cleared of the racketeering, murder, and gang charges.

Reports about the film say the trial ran for more than a year. A trailer and a list of people who will appear on screen haven’t been shared. The production credits and the 2027 timing come from the judge’s interview and from reports that followed it.
