More people voted early in Langley Township
Advance voting hit a new record high in Langley Township in 2026, with almost 10,000 people casting ballots before.
Advance voting took place between Tuesday, Oct. 6 and Saturday, Oct. 10 at six sites spread across the Township.
According to Township deputy election officer Wendy Bauer, 9,876 ballots were cast in total at the early polls this year.
In 2022, there were 7,126 ballots cast in the advance polls, so this year marks a significant increase.
However, interest in early voting may not reflect an increase in voting overall.
The 2022 advance polls showed a staggering 56.41 per cent jump over the 2018 advance voting numbers.
But after the general election day and all the votes were counted, 25,936 ballots were cast in total in the Township .
That was only a slight increase on the 25,747 people who voted in 2018, despite the fact that Langley’s population growth had been strong through that entire period. It translated to a dip in overall voter turnout.
Langley Township’s turnout was more than 26 per cent in 2022, and just over 30 per cent in 2018.
Early voting has become increasingly popular for elections at all levels of government over the years, as people who already plan to vote take advantage of the early polls. But that does not seem to have increased the overall turnout rate.
Voter turnout is usually lowest in municipal elections, with provincial and federal elections seeing significantly higher numbers of voters.
This year’s general election day is Saturday, Oct. 17, and polls will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at 15 locations across the Township. For more information, visit the elections page on the Township’s website .
