White Cane Awareness Walk scheduled for lakefront boardwalk

The city of Lake Charles is teaming up with the Mayor’s Commission on Disability and the Lake Area Chapter of the National Federation of the Blind of Louisiana to host a White Cane Awareness Walk on Thursday, Oct. 15.
The walk will take place on the Lakefront Boardwalk behind Port Wonder, beginning at 6 p.m.
At the conclusion of the walk, Mayor Simien will present a proclamation in honor of White Cane Safety Day.
Each year, the American Council of the Blind joins organizations around the world to recognize the achievements of people who are blind or have low vision. The day also celebrates the white cane as a powerful symbol of independence that empowers individuals to travel safely and confidently while reminding the community at large of the importance of accessible environments and public access.
