N ellie Fest, this quarter’s Music in the Park series at the Nellie Lutcher Memorial Park in Lake Charles, will pay tribute to Nellie Lutcher.

The event will take place from 5-7 p.m. Sunday.

Lutcher, Lake Charles’ own legendary jazz singer, was born on Oct. 15, 1912, in Lake Charles.

“We started Music in the Park in 2024 and it was after renovations were completed in the park and we wanted to start a series that would bring the space to life and honor Nellie’s legacy and keep intentions on the park by paying attention to her as well and supporting local businesses in the area,” said Reilyn Hilton, Historic City Hall arts and cultural center cultural affairs assistant.

The Mark Portier Trio will take the stage for their first time performing at a Music in the Park event bringing soulful sounds and high-energy blues-rock to the community. The band is led by Mark Portier whose raw emotive vocals and powerful guitar work delivers a distinctive sound blending classical blues influences with modern rock energy.

The event takes advantage of an outdoor setting allowing attendees to enjoy a relaxing evening filled with music, fresh air and community connection.

The Mardi Gras Museum will join in the festivities with a special display booth, adding a touch of local culture and Louisiana tradition. Director David Faulk said this will be the museum’s first time participating in the event and is excited to have a booth set up where attendees can pick up beads and miniature fans.

This event is free and open to the public.

“It’s a free and family-friendly event with family-friendly music and a great opportunity for all ages to come out and relax with a great atmosphere,” Hilton said.

There will be two food trucks available on-site as well as non-alcoholic beverages to purchase. Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, picnic baskets and ice chests, but glass is strictly prohibited.
