Rent Commissioner Orders Reinstatement of Evicted Tenant at Lashibi
Acting Rent Commissioner Frederick Opoku has ordered the immediate reinstatement of a tenant allegedly evicted by her landlady at Lashibi Community 16.
Mr. Opoku issued the directive on Thursday, 15th October, 2026, after reports that the landlady had broken into the tenant’s room and removed her belongings while she was away.
The landlady reportedly claimed the room was infested with rats, but the Commissioner rejected the explanation, insisting that landlords cannot evict tenants by force.
“Neither landlords nor the Rent Control Department has the power to evict people. The only institution that has that power is the court,” he said.
The tenant, who had occupied the room for about a month, was reportedly up to date with her rent and still had a security deposit with the landlady.
Mr. Opoku directed the police at the scene to supervise the return of her belongings and ensure she regained access to the room until a court decided otherwise.
He said the police would investigate the alleged forced entry, take an inventory of the removed items and handle the criminal aspect of the case.
The tenancy dispute will also be taken to a court of competent jurisdiction for a decision.
Mr. Opoku cautioned landlords against forcibly evicting tenants, urging them to use legal processes to resolve disputes over rent and accommodation.
