Kilburn & District Properties and development manager General Projects have submitted plans to transform a 1960s building in the heart of Camden Town into a new student living scheme.

Designed by AHMM, the proposals will see the long-vacant former British Transport Police refurbished and extended to provide 345 student beds in addition to 20,000 sq ft of flexible commercial and community space at ground level.

Students will be able to choose from a variety of bedroom typologies across a mix of studios and cluster rooms, with the on-site amenity provision including study spaces, fitness facilities, communal lounges and terraces.

The waterfront site currently provides no public access to the Regent’s Canal and the proposals seek to open approximately 125 ft of previously inaccessible canal frontage, creating a new step-free route from the street to the water’s edge.

Duncan Gilbert and Nicholas Gilbert, from Kilburn & District Properties, said: “Our ambition is to create a distinctive new landmark for Camden Town, one that draws inspiration from the area’s rich industrial heritage while embracing contemporary architecture and sustainable design. Creating student homes in this exciting location is an opportunity not only to give the existing building a new lease of life, but also to help rebalance Camden Town towards its north western corridor, opening up this under appreciated stretch of Regent’s Canal and creating a more welcoming, connected and vibrant place for the wider community.

“The project reflects our wider philosophy of long-term stewardship by reimagining a disused building as an active new student hub, opening up the public realm around the site and making a positive contribution to the wider community.”
