Can You Show Up For Flight In Gym Clothes? You Might Get Dress-Coded: ‘People Think They Can Wear Gym Clothes Anywhere

Daily, air travelers walk miles across massive airports —while catching occasional trams in between—to catch their flights . Then, they have to sit for hours on a crammed plane until they get to their destination. For the long journey , naturally, people want to be comfortable .
For Brooke, a proclaimed 23-year-old, former D1 athlete, and the central figure of the (@brookemercerfit) AI-generated TikTok account, the same is true.
On the page, the administrator completed a simulation of the “gym enthusiast” being denied entry onto a Delta flight over her gym attire. The video amassed a whopping 2 million views, and most of the 6,000 commenters took it at face value, assuming Brooke is a real person and that this scenario actually happened.
The clip shows Brooke is speaking with a gate agent, accompanied by security. She is wearing black spandex shorts, exposing the bottom of her buttocks and a sage-colored midriff tank. The caption on the video reads, “Apparently, there’s a dress code to sit on an airplane now…”
While this specific scenario is simulated, this is a possibility and has been a reality for some airport travelers.
Kay Rose (@kayymrose), a woman traveling from Florida to New York, says she got dress-coded for wearing an Alo crop top and sweatpants . Delta tried to make amends with the traveler after the incident. Rose told BroBible, “I heard back from delta and they only offered me $75 credit or 7500 miles and I said no and the most they could offer was 15,000 miles or $150 credit. I did make it to my destination but she was so rude and delta basically doesn’t do anything for this.”
While airline dress codes are not heavily enforced, dress codes do exist.
Does Delta Have A Dress Code?
Airlines, like many commercial businesses, have a wide pool of consumers to appeal to. There are children and families, athletes, executives, blue-collar workers, young adults, and others who fit into a number of those categories who have to fly. And in that, the goal is for all parties to feel comfortable, respected, and safe. Upholding a dress code is one way to achieve that goal.
In Delta’s Contract of Carriage , in Section E (Passengers Conduct or Condition), there are guidelines about when the airline can “refuse to provide transportation.” There are two specific line items regarding dress code. The first is passengers cannot enter the airplane barefoot.
The second states, “When the passenger’s conduct, attire, hygiene or odor creates an unreasonable risk of offense or annoyance to other passengers.”
The dress code language is broad, leaving enforcement and discretion mainly to the gate agents, flight attendants, pilots, and (as far fetched as it may sound) other passengers. When a person is dress coded, Delta reserves the right to bar the passenger from the flight. Whether there would be any recourse for the flight ticket is also at their discretion—on a case-by-case basis.
Viewers Take The Video At Face Value
Tension ensued in the comments, with commenters accusing Brooke of purposely being lewd.
“The fact she had to be told,” one said.
“LOOK AT MEEE LOOK AT MEEE!” another mocked her.
Others came to her defense, refuting the logic of equating attire to respectability.
“How someone dresses has ZERO to do with whether they respect other people! Imagine thinking other people’s lives revolve around you! It’s okay to say you feel insecure around people like this,” one said, referring to the AI model’s body-building physique.
In the end, an overwhelming amount of commenters agreed that there is a thick line between athleisure and a tank top with cheeky shorts.
“She’s basically in a bra and underwear for goodness sakes,” one said.
“There has always been a dress code. she’s not at the gym shes in a public space,” another wrote.
“There has always been a dress code,” a third agreed.
