Cobb County early voting draws 16,392 voters on opening day

By Mark Woolsey
Early voting has kicked off at a rapid clip across both Cobb County and Georgia.
County elections and voter registration director Leigh Phillips says the 13 polling spots across Cobb recorded 16,392 votes on the inaugural day of balloting Tuesday, Oct. 13.
Phillips says the average time needed to process voters was 1 minute and 16 seconds. She says average voter wait times were five minutes or less throughout the 7.a.m.-7 p.m. window and added the longest wait time was about 30 minutes during peak periods.
Shea says the busiest polling place was at First Baptist Church of Smyrna, drawing 808 voters. The slowest was at the Gritters Library, which totaled 139.
“Everything was great,” was how the elections director summed up the day.
Statewide, voters shattered the record for a first day of early voting, with more than 188,600 trooping to the polls. That’s a jump of more than 53 thousand compared to first-day voting in the 2022 midterms.
The numbers pleased Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger.
“This record-breaking turnout proves that voters have confidence in the integrity of our elections, “ he said in a statement, “It’s a testament to our strong election system overseen by 159 of the best county election officials in the country,”
This year’s balloting is a high-stakes affair, with a U.S. Senate seat and the Governor’s race taking center stage.
Early voting runs through Oct. 30. Election day is Nov. 3.
