Nigerian singer, Timi Dakolo has sparked widespread debate after posting a call for restraint in personal relationships amid political differences.
The singer in an X statement on Thursday enjoined Nigerians to halt creating foes because of politics.
“Stop making enemies because of politics,” Dakolo had written on Thursday.
In a follow-up post later the same day, he expanded on the point, “As u can see politicians are no really Dey fight. Na the common man Dey gather enemies. If you like be killing ya sef, all they need to do move party and they become friends.”
The post quickly gained significant traction, drawing thousands of likes, reposts, quotes and replies.
Many users pushed back, arguing that political affiliations often reflect deeper disagreements over governance, security and accountability.
Some replies highlighted concerns about political violence, while others dismissed the advice as unrealistic in Nigeria’s highly polarised environment.
Dakolo, who rose to fame as the winner of the first season of Idols West Africa in 2007, is known for his soulful music and songs promoting national unity, including the popular track “Great Nation.”
Over the years he has spoken on social and political issues, advocating for better governance while occasionally drawing criticism for performing at political events.
His latest comments come against the backdrop of ongoing political tensions in Nigeria, where supporters of different parties and candidates frequently clash online and offline.
