Winnie Odinga Announces Nairobi Senate Bid Ahead of 2027 Elections

East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) Member of Parliament Winnie Odinga has announced her intention to contest the Nairobi senatorial seat in the 2027 General Election, setting the stage for a potentially competitive race.

Winnie, the daughter of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, made the announcement on Thursday, October 15, during a ceremony marking one year since her father’s death.

Speaking at Migwena Cultural Grounds, she said she had decided to pursue the Nairobi Senate seat as other political leaders considered their next moves ahead of the elections.

“Let it not be a rumour that as Edwin Sifuna searches for higher offices, I see there is some space in Nairobi and that is why I have decided I will vie for Senator of Nairobi county,” Winnie declared.

Her announcement places her among the emerging contenders for the seat currently held by Edwin Sifuna, whose political ambitions have attracted attention as the 2027 elections approach.

However, Winnie did not disclose which political party or electoral vehicle she would use to contest the seat.

Winnie Odinga Calls on Youth to Join Politics

The EALA legislator also encouraged young people from across the country to participate actively in politics and consider seeking elective positions.

Her appeal comes as political parties and prospective candidates begin preparing for the 2027 General Election, with youth participation and leadership succession expected to feature prominently in political campaigns.

Winnie’s decision to target Nairobi introduces another possible contest within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), which has traditionally enjoyed considerable electoral support in parts of the capital.

She also appeared keen to distinguish her political plans from speculation about Sifuna’s ambitions, signalling that she intends to pursue her own path rather than rely on another politician’s political momentum.

The question of party affiliation remains unresolved, and it is not yet clear whether Winnie will seek an ODM ticket or contest through another political platform.

Winnie Joins Growing List of Nairobi Senate Aspirants

Winnie’s declaration adds to an expanding list of politicians and public figures positioning themselves for the Nairobi senatorial race.

Lang’ata MP Felix Odiwuor, popularly known as Jalang’o, has also declared his intention to challenge Sifuna for the seat, reportedly under the ODM ticket.

Other potential contenders include city lawyer Danstan Omari, musician Domani Munga of the rap group Wakadinali, United Opposition youth leader Ken Babu, musician KRG The Don, lawyer Cecil Miller, former Makadara MP Reuben Ndolo and nominated Senator Crystal Asige.

The eventual field of candidates will depend on party nominations and formal declarations as the election period approaches.

With several personalities potentially seeking the same seat, Nairobi could witness a closely watched contest shaped by party loyalty, youth mobilisation and candidates’ ability to connect with the city’s diverse electorate.

Winnie’s Announcement Follows Luo Elders’ Ceremony

Winnie’s political declaration comes about a week after a section of Luo Council of Elders reportedly recognised her as her father’s heir during a ceremony at the Odinga family’s Opoda Farm in Bondo, Siaya County.

The development has drawn attention to questions surrounding Raila’s political legacy and the future leadership of the family’s political base.

However, traditional recognition and political succession are distinct matters, and the elders’ ceremony does not automatically determine who will lead ODM or inherit its electoral support.

Winnie’s brothe r, Raila Odinga Junior, has also been linked to political ambitions in Nairobi. He has been pursuing interest in the Kibra parliamentary seat after previously expressing interest in Embakasi South.

His mother, Ida Odinga, has backed his Kibra ambitions, while he has reportedly consulted senior family members, including Oburu Oginga.

Nairobi Senate Race Takes Shape

Winnie’s entry into the race adds a new dimension to Nairobi’s political contest ahead of the 2027 polls.

Her family name, national political profile and appeal to younger voters could make her a notable contender, although her chances will depend on her campaign strategy, party affiliation and support among Nairobi residents.
