VP sees Nkangamo Power project hit 83 percent completion

TUNDUMA: VICE President Deogratius Ndejembi has visited the Nkangamo Power Substation in Momba District, Songwe Region, which is being constructed at a cost of 285.7 bn/- as part of strategic projects aimed at strengthening the country’s energy infrastructure and opening up electricity trading opportunities in Southern Africa.

Upon completion, the substation will be capable of receiving electricity at 400 kilovolts (kV) and stepping it down to 330 kV, 220 kV and 33 kV. This will help improve electricity distribution for domestic consumption and economic activities.

According to a briefing presented to the Vice-President by Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO) Managing Director General, Lazaro Twange, the project had reached 83.13 per cent completion as of October 11, 2026. The substation is expected to be energised in November this year.

Completion of the project is expected to improve energy availability in Songwe Region, stimulate industrial growth and other productive activities, and enable Tanzania to participate in electricity trading with member states of the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP) through Zambia, once that country completes its section of the Tanzania-Zambia (TAZA) project.

The Vice-President’s visit to Songwe Region is aimed at inspecting ongoing development projects and ensuring that funds allocated for development are translated into tangible services that improve citizens’ livelihoods and contribute to national economic growth.
