NIS Vows Justice as Gunmen Kill Officer, Injure Another in Niger
The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has vowed to bring to justice the armed men who attacked two of its personnel on routine surveillance patrol in Niger State, killing one officer and leaving another seriously injured.
The incident occurred on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, at about 11:30 a.m. along the Tunga Taya–Woro axis of Niger State, involving personnel attached to the Service’s Wawa Control Post.
The Service’s Public Relations Officer, DCI Akinsola Akinlabi, disclosed this in a statement issued on Thursday, October 15, saying the attack claimed the life of Assistant Superintendent of Immigration I.U. Babangida, while Inspector A.K. Musa sustained serious injuries but managed to escape.
According to Akinlabi, the injured officer is currently receiving medical attention, while the deceased has been laid to rest in accordance with Islamic rites.
The Service paid tribute to Babangida for his sacrifice and unwavering commitment to duty, describing his death as a painful loss to the organisation.
It also extended its condolences to the deceased officer’s family, colleagues and loved ones, while wishing the injured personnel a speedy recovery.
The NIS assured both families of its continued support and assistance during the difficult period.
On efforts to apprehend the perpetrators, the Service said it was working closely with the Niger State Government and relevant security agencies to identify and arrest those responsible for the attack.
It expressed determination to ensure that the perpetrators were brought to justice, stressing that the incident would not deter it from carrying out its statutory responsibilities.
Reaffirming its commitment to national security, the Service said it remained undeterred and would continue to safeguard Nigeria’s borders despite the unfortunate incident.
