Armenia to appoint Military Attaché to Canada starting in 2027

Armenia will establish a military attaché position at its embassy in Canada, with the post to be held concurrently by Armenia’s military attaché to the United States, in a move aimed at developing defense cooperation with both countries.

The Armenian government approved the relevant decision at its meeting on October 15.

According to the rationale prepared by the Ministry of Defense, the military attaché is expected to assume duties on January 1, 2027, subject to notification of the Canadian side, completion of the accreditation process, and receipt of the necessary approval.

The attaché will establish official contacts and strengthen ties between the defense ministries of Armenia and Canada, monitor the implementation of cooperation programs, and support the organization of visits by delegations from Armenia’s Ministry of Defense and Armed Forces.

The official will also represent Armenia at military parades, exercises, troop movements, and exhibitions of weapons and military equipment organized at the invitation of Canadian military authorities. The attaché will visit military educational institutions and defense industry enterprises as well.

The Defense Ministry identified several potential areas of cooperation at the current stage, including instructor training, joint participation in international peacekeeping missions, protection of the rights of women serving in the armed forces, civilian oversight of the military, and the exchange of experience in internal auditing and the introduction of anti-corruption mechanisms.

Further cooperation could extend to bilateral military and political consultations, military education, training of professional non-commissioned officers and military personnel, military medicine, and other specialized fields.

The ministry also views the development of ties with Canada in the broader context of Armenia-NATO cooperation. The military attaché is expected to support the consistent implementation of activities in Canada under the Individual Partnership Action Plan and put forward proposals to further develop bilateral defense cooperation.
