ODM Warns Kenyans Against Spreading Fake Death Reports About Oburu Oginga

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has cautioned Kenyans against spreading false information about party leader and Siaya Senator Oburu Oginga’s health, saying the rumours have distressed his family as he continues to recover after weeks of medical treatment.

In a statement attributed to ODM communications official Philip Etale, the party said the continued circulation of unverified claims about Oburu’s health was causing concern and urged members of the public to exercise responsibility when sharing information online.

“Fellow Kenyans, the family of the ODM Party Leader Sen. (Dr) Oburu Oginga is devastated by the continued spreading of FAKE News relating to his health,” Etale stated.

The party reminded Kenyans that although freedom of expression is protected, it should be exercised responsibly and with respect for other people.

“Whereas we enjoy the freedoms that give us the latitude to express ourselves freely, as citizens of Kenya, we must do it responsibly and with respect for other people,” he added.

ODM addresses rumours about Oburu’s health

The warning follows rumours circulating on social media in recent weeks alleging that the veteran politician had died.

The claims gained attention as Oburu missed several public engagements, prompting speculation about his condition.

However, the party has not publicly disclosed a specific diagnosis. According to the statement, Oburu has been taking time to rest and recuperate following several weeks of treatment both in Kenya and abroad.

The party appealed to those circulating the reports to give him time to recover before resuming his public duties.

“As he takes time to rest and recuperates after several weeks of treatment both abroad and locally, he wishes that the section of Kenyans who are happily spreading the news will give him time to recover fully, regain his health and energy and then return to active life soon,” the statement said.

Oburu misses Raila Odinga mausoleum handover

Oburu’s absence from public events has added to questions about his wellbeing.

Among the engagements he missed was the handover ceremony for the Raila Odinga Mausoleum, held at his father’s home in Kang’o Ka Jaramogi, Bondo, Siaya County, on October 7.

During the ceremony, a statement from Oburu was read by his son, Jaoko Oburu, indicating that the senator was taking a period of rest and would return to active public life after consultations with his doctors.

The absence prompted renewed discussion online, with some social media users circulating claims about his health.

Secretariat dismisses death reports

Last week, the Oburu Odinga Secretariat issued a statement rejecting reports that the senator had died.

The secretariat sought to reassure ODM supporters, residents of Siaya County and the wider public that Oburu was alive and recovering.

“We wish to assure the general public, members of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), the people of Siaya County, and the entire nation that Dr. Oburu Oginga is well, safe, and in good spirits,” the secretariat said.

The statement also indicated that Oburu was resting on medical advice.

Neither the party nor the secretariat disclosed a specific medical diagnosis in the statements cited.

ODM’s latest warning underscores the importance of verifying sensitive health-related claims before sharing them, particularly when they concern public figures and their families.
