Man dies on Rhodes as storms batter Greece for second day

Severe storms continued across Greece for a second day on Wednesday, killing a man on Rhodes and causing flooding, evacuations and widespread damage.

The 62-year-old hotel worker was swept into the sea with his vehicle in Stegna, near Archangelos, as floodwaters carried several vehicles off the island’s roads.

Rhodes was declared a state of emergency, with schools closed on Thursday for safety checks and residents urged to travel only when necessary.

Emergency crews on Rhodes responded to 113 calls, rescued people and carried out 64 water-pumping operations. Firefighters also dealt with flooding and fallen trees in the Athens region and central Greece.

Authorities issued alerts in parts of Evia after rivers overflowed, urging some residents to evacuate.

Conditions were easing across much of the country, although rain and thunderstorms were expected to continue in eastern and southern areas, alongside strong northerly winds in the Aegean.
