Ghana’s First President’s Son, Gamal Nkrumah, Dies At 68 In Egypt

Gamal Gorkeh Nkrumah, son of Ghana’s first president, Kwame Nkrumah, has died at the age of 68 in Cairo, Egypt.

His death was confirmed by family sources, who told Deutsche Welle (DW) that he died peacefully after a prolonged illness.

Gamal had reportedly been receiving treatment at a rehabilitation centre after suffering a stroke.

Born in Accra, Ghana, he was the son of Kwame Nkrumah and his Egyptian wife, Fathia Nkrumah.

Unlike his father, who was widely known for his role in Ghana’s independence struggle and the campaign for African unity, Gamal made his mark in journalism, focusing on African politics, international affairs and Pan-Africanism.

He spent more than 15 years working as an editor and columnist at Al-Ahram Weekly, an English-language publication in Egypt. Through his writing, he examined political developments across Africa and explored issues surrounding international relations and cooperation among African countries.

His work also reflected his interest in Pan-Africanism, a movement that promotes unity and solidarity among African nations and people of African descent around the world.

Gamal was born into a family with a significant place in African history. His father, Kwame Nkrumah, led Ghana to independence from British colonial rule in 1957, becoming the country’s first president.

The elder Nkrumah was a leading advocate of African unity and played a major role in shaping Pan-African political thought.

Gamal’s burial is scheduled to take place in Egypt on October 17, in accordance with Islamic traditions, according to reports.

The family also said further details about memorial arrangements would be announced later.
