2027 Political Realignment: Showunmi Thre@tens To Expose Atiku
Otunba Segun Showunmi, a former spokesperson for opposition presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar, has warned political opponents and opposition loyalists against attacking him over his decision to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election bid ahead of the 2027 general elections.
According to reports monitored by Ireporter Online, Showunmi issued the warning during a media engagement with political correspondents in Abuja on Thursday, amid growing political realignments ahead of the next general elections.
Showunmi expressed frustration with critics who accuse the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of attempting to establish a one-party state, arguing that opposition parties should concentrate on building their structures and developing credible alternatives to the incumbent administration.
He warned that he would respond forcefully if provoked, suggesting that he possessed sensitive information about some of his critics.
The former Atiku campaign spokesperson also rejected claims that Tinubu was steering Nigeria towards a one-party system, pointing to the country’s multiparty political structure and more than 100 million registered voters as evidence of the existing electoral landscape.
Showunmi argued that opposition leaders had failed to establish viable coalitions and strengthen their political organisations early enough, choosing instead to focus on individual ambitions and blame the ruling party for their difficulties.
He maintained that political parties should invest in organisation, leadership and coalition-building rather than abandon their structures when individual members fail to secure tickets or achieve personal political goals.
According to him, elections should be determined by voters’ assessment of an administration’s performance and the alternative policies presented by competing parties, rather than allegations that the incumbent government is responsible for the opposition’s organisational challenges.
Showunmi urged political actors to focus on development and the issues affecting Nigerians as preparations for the 2027 elections gather momentum.
