Akpabio to Tinubu: National Assembly Solidly Behind You for 2027

President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has declared the National Assembly’s full support for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027, assuring that nobody can penetrate the legislature to destabilise the president.

Akpabio made the declaration on Wednesday in Abuja during the inauguration of the All Progressives Congress (APC) 2027 presidential campaign council.

He said Tinubu deserved a second term because of his performance in office and the reforms being implemented by his administration.

“Mr President, it’s because of your personae, because you’ve done well and you deserve a second term in office,” Akpabio said.

He added that Nigerians were beginning to recognise the administration’s reforms, insisting that the National Assembly remained firmly behind the president.

“What is happening tonight is the fact that Nigerians are seeing your reforms, and Nigerians have also seen the fact that nobody can break through the National Assembly to destabilise you. We are solidly behind you,” he said.

The Senate president disclosed that several lawmakers had expressed interest in accompanying him to the campaign council’s activities, including members of opposition parties.

According to him, some senators had appealed to him not to attend the gathering without them, prompting him to seek Tinubu’s permission to bring additional lawmakers to future engagements.

“Your Excellency, I want your permission to come next time with the minority leader and those in the minorities in the National Assembly,” he said, specifically mentioning Senate Minority Leader Abba Moro.

Akpabio described the composition of Tinubu’s campaign council as unprecedented in Nigeria’s democratic history since 1999, noting that it brought together political figures from different parties.

He said the development demonstrated that governance and national development should transcend party affiliations.

Among those he congratulated for their participation were Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP); Anambra State Governor, Chukwuma Soludo, of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA); and Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, of the Accord Party.

Akpabio particularly commended Soludo, expressing optimism that the Anambra governor’s experience and contributions would benefit the country.

He also urged Tinubu to pay attention to Soludo’s advice, recalling the governor’s analogy that attempting to mend an untorn garment could end up tearing it.

The Senate president used the illustration to advocate greater cooperation and encourage lawmakers to support Tinubu’s second-term ambition.

Akpabio, however, cautioned state governors against abandoning their constituents while pursuing other political ambitions.

“And for my brothers who are governors, I want you to know that you must not abandon your people,” he said.

Drawing from his experience as a former governor, Akpabio argued that elected officials should concentrate on fulfilling their constitutional responsibilities rather than pursuing positions that may not be available.

“I did eight years as a governor. And the constitution says you should do eight years. There’s no need for you to start eyeing another position that is not available,” he added.

The statement was issued by Jackson Udom, Special Assistant to the President of the Senate on Media.
