FG Reopens First Niger Bridge after 38-day Closure
The Federal Government has reopened the First Niger Bridge between Onitsha, Anambra State, and Asaba, Delta State, following 38 days of emergency rehabilitation work.
The Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, reopened the bridge on Thursday at a ceremony attended by government officials and traditional rulers from both states.
According to reports, the bridge was closed on September 7 after the discovery of vandalised structural components, including expansion-joint steelwork, which required urgent repairs. The closure which was initially scheduled to end on September 21, was extended indefinitely due to persistent rainfall and other delays.
Umahi, speaking at the reopening ceremony held at the Onitsha end of the bridge, called on residents of the South-East and South-South to support President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid, pointing to the Federal Government’s infrastructure projects in the two regions.
“We have no regret supporting President Bola Tinubu. Let me declare, in opening this bridge, that I have no regret supporting Mr President.
“I am very, very proud for him to be my boss. He is the most qualified and eminently qualified to lead this country.” He said.
“And so, by the power of Mr President and in our deep appreciation of what he has done for the people of South-South and South-East in this bridge, it is my humble pleasure, and with gratitude to God Almighty, to open this bridge for the benefit of our people, in Jesus name.” he added.
He also praised the governors of Anambra and Delta states and the contractor, SKCC, for their roles in the rehabilitation work.
“We must commend the contractors, SKCC, very, very highly; they have worked very well,” he said.
The minister noted that the repairs were to enhance traffic movement and improve road safety, noting that the rehabilitation work was not yet fully completed.
