Simon Ekpa’s prison sentence reduced by Finnish court
A Finnish Court of Appeal has reduced the prison sentence imposed on Biafra agitator Simon Ekpa from six years to four years.
The court delivered its judgment on Thursday, upholding the earlier conviction of Ekpa on terrorism-related charges while ordering a reduction in his prison term.
According to Finnish newspaper Yle, the appellate court upheld the decision of the Päijät-Häme District Court, which sentenced Ekpa to six years in prison last year.
It was earlier reported that the lower court found Ekpa guilty of terrorism-related offences and aggravated tax fraud.
Dissatisfied with the judgment, Ekpa appealed the decision, seeking a review by the higher court.
However, the Court of Appeal upheld the terrorism conviction but reduced his sentence by two years, bringing his prison term to four years.
The ruling means Ekpa’s conviction remains in place, although the length of his imprisonment has been reduced.
The latest judgment marks a new development in the legal proceedings against the Biafra agitator, who has faced prosecution in Finland over terrorism-related allegations.
