ECSL Joins ECOWAS Workshop on Responsible Use of AI in Elections

The Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone (ECSL) is participating in an ECOWAS Network of Electoral Commissions (ECONEC) validation workshop on guidelines for the responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI) in election administration in West Africa, held at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel in Abuja, Nigeria.

ECSL is represented by Abubakarr Mamoud Koroma, Electoral Commissioner for the Northern Region, and Dominic Tucker, Executive Assistant to the Chief Electoral Commissioner and Chairman.

The workshop brings together electoral management bodies from Sierra Leone, Liberia, Togo, Guinea, Senegal, Nigeria and The Gambia to review and validate draft regional guidelines promoting the ethical, responsible and accountable use of AI in electoral processes.

Delivering the keynote address, ECONEC President and Senegal’s Chief Electoral Commissioner, Abdoulaye Silla, emphasised the need for clear guidelines to ensure AI supports election management while addressing potential risks and maintaining human oversight.

Participants are reviewing the draft guidelines and examining practical approaches to AI governance and its application across electoral operations in West Africa.

ECSL’s participation reflects its commitment to regional cooperation, institutional learning and the responsible adoption of emerging technologies to strengthen electoral administration in Sierra Leone.
