Chipinge Man Jailed for Effective 30 Years for Rape and Robbery

Staff Writer

CHIPINGE — A 40-year-old man has been sentenced to an effective 30 years in prison after being convicted of rape and robbery by the Chipinge Regional Magistrates’ Court.

According to a bulletin issued by the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ) on 13 October 2026, the offences occurred on 18 September 2026 when the man allegedly entered the victim’s bedroom at around 1am while she was asleep.

The court heard that the offender was armed with an okapi knife when he threatened the woman and her 12-year-old nephew, ordering them to remain silent as he demanded money.

The State proved that the man forcibly raped the woman before stealing her Huawei cellphone valued at US$90 and groceries worth approximately US$30.

He then fled the scene.

The victim later informed her husband about the incident when he returned from a funeral, prompting a police report that led to the man’s arrest and subsequent conviction.

In passing sentence, the court imposed 20 years’ imprisonment for rape, with two years suspended for five years on condition of good behaviour, and 12 years for robbery.

The sentences will result in an effective 30-year prison term.

The NPAZ condemned all forms of sexual violence, reaffirming its commitment to protecting communities and ensuring that perpetrators face justice.

“The Authority remains committed to protecting communities, supporting victims and ensuring that offenders are held accountable for their actions,” the NPAZ said.
