La Union starts P12-M hanging bridge replacement

MALASIQUI, Pangasinan – The destroyed hanging bridge in Barangay Bungol, Balaoan, La Union, is set for replacement, with construction to start this week.
The replacement of the 96-meter bridge is funded with PHP12 million by the provincial government of La Union and will benefit residents of Barangays Bungol, Arosip, and Lacong, the provincial government said in a statement on Thursday.
The provincial government also vowed that the bridge, targeted for completion next year, would be sturdier and could accommodate tricycles and motorcycles.
Evelyn Mantac, a resident, said that once completed, the bridge would be very helpful to them.
“Mas mapapadali na ang aming pagdadala ng panindang gulay sa palengke at hindi na kailangang maghintay na humupa ang rumaragasang tubig tuwing may bagyo. Magsisilbi rin itong bagong daanan para sa mga tricycle at motorsiklo, at makatutulong rin ito sa mas mabilis na pagresponde sa oras ng emergency (The transport of vegetables would be easier, and there is no need to wait for the water to subside before crossing whenever there are typhoons. It would also serve as a new road for tricycles and motorcycles, and would also help in faster response during emergencies),” she said.
The hanging bridge was destroyed by Typhoon Emong in 2025. (PNA)
