Court to decide Wontumi’s bail pending appeal on November 4

The Accra High Court is expected to rule on November 4, 2026, on an application by former New Patriotic Party (NPP) Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, seeking bail pending an appeal against his 20-year prison sentence.
Wontumi’s lawyer, Samuel Atta Akyea, urged the court to grant his client bail, arguing that the 19 grounds of appeal filed against the conviction had strong prospects of success.
He also contended that releasing the former NPP regional chairman would enable him to adequately prepare his appeal and assist in his defence in another criminal case he is facing.
However, Deputy Attorney-General, Dr. Justice Srem-Sai, opposed the application, insisting that the defence had failed to demonstrate exceptional circumstances to justify the granting of bail.
He further argued that Wontumi posed a flight risk, pointing to the other criminal cases pending against him.
The court is now expected to determine whether the circumstances presented by the defence are sufficient to warrant his release while the appeal process continues.
Wontumi was sentenced to 20 years in prison following his conviction in an illegal mining-related case involving his concession at Samreboi in the Western Region.
