U.S. Electric Vehicle Sales Soar
It’s too early to pronounce a downturn in the U.S. electric vehicle market. Following a dip in sales linked to the elimination of tax incentives last year, new data from Cox Automotive indicates a recovery over the last three quarters.
At present, electric vehicles hold a 6.1% share of the U.S. market, marking their strongest performance since the third quarter of 2025. Stephanie Valdez Streaty, the director of industry insights at Cox Automotive, noted in the report that the EV sector is “regaining its momentum.” This revival is primarily attributed to more competitive pricing for EVs and a surge in consumer interest fueled by rising gasoline prices.
Brands such as Toyota, Rivian, and Subaru are spearheading this resurgence. Following the introduction of new models, sales of the Toyota bZ and Lexus RZ nearly doubled after their arrival at dealerships late last year. These updated models incorporate charging ports similar to those of Tesla, along with enhanced batteries, upgraded motors, and faster charging options.
In contrast, Tesla saw a 20% decrease in sales compared to the previous year. Nonetheless, the company retains its status as the market leader, representing over half of all electric vehicle sales in the third quarter.
The recovery observed in the U.S. parallels a similar situation in Germany, where EV purchase incentives were withdrawn in November 2023, one year earlier than planned. Sales plummeted by more than 50% the subsequent month; however, following this low point, the market began to recover significantly. By August, the most recent month for which data is available, German EV sales reached their second-highest level on record.
