Breaking down the implications, storylines of Indiana football vs Ohio State
INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA - DECEMBER 06: Head coach Curt Cignetti of the Indiana Hoosiers talks with head coach Ryan Day of the Ohio State Buckeyes after a 13-10 victory in the 2025 Big Ten Football Championship at Lucas Oil Stadium on December 06, 2025 in Indianapolis, Indiana. Here’s a handful of storylines and numbers to know that put the matchup into context:
Local
Curt Cignetti’s undefeated record in Bloomington. Cignetti has yet to lose a home game through two and a half seasons as Indiana’s head coach, having beaten every Big Ten opponent to show up at Memorial Stadium during that span. That record will be put to the test on Saturday against, by some distance, the strongest opponent he’s faced during that span.
The biggest event in Bloomington since… ? Indiana’s had a few substantial basketball games over the years, knocking off No. 1 in men’s basketball a few times, beating Iowa and Caitlin Clark in women’s basketball and cutting down the nets after winning the conference championship in 2023. This matchup carries perhaps the most implications of any of those.
Memorial Stadium as a home environment. Memorial Stadium has produced fantastic home environments during Cignetti’s tenure with special nods given to games against Michigan, Purdue, Illinois, Washington and others over the years. Can it carry that into this weekend?
Cignetti’s record against Big Ten foes. Indiana’s head coach has lost to just one Big Ten program in two and a half seasons, falling to Ohio State on the road in 2024 the last time the two played in the regular season. That too was a top-5 matchup and one he’ll have the chance to further avenge this weekend.
The history vs Ohio State. Yes, Indiana beat Ohio State in the Big Ten Championship Game last season, but the Hoosiers haven’t bested the Buckeyes in regular season play since a 41-7 win at Memorial Stadium in 1988. They’ll have a chance to further cement that record as a thing of the past on Saturday.
National
Last two national champions . Indiana and Ohio State had to go through one another in their respective runs to the national championship with the Hoosiers winning last season’s Big Ten Championship Game and the Buckeyes winning in the regular season back in 2024. It’s not often that we get matchups between recent champions in the Big Ten, so this is one to be savored.
This year’s Big Ten title race . Whichever team wins on Saturday will be strongly favored to emerge as the conference champion when December rolls around. The victor would’ve already proven itself against another top team and neither will be tested too much by the remaining schedule.
The Big Ten’s strength at the top . With Oregon falling off following losses to Oklahoma State and UCLA, Indiana and Ohio State currently reign atop the Big Ten until proven otherwise. The conference has been top heavy for multiple seasons now and that looks to be the same in 2026.
