Kundasang’s Subky beats opponent 20 years his junior

Kota Kinabalu: Kundasang fighter Mohd Subky, 44, stopped an opponent 20 years his junior as SFG Muay Thai collected 14 gold and 15 silver medals at the Sabah Muay Expo (SME) 2026.

Mohd Subky secured a third-round technical knockout (TKO) victory over his 24-year-old Beaufort opponent, delivering one of SFG’s standout performances at Palm Square, Centre Point, here, from Oct 9 to 11.

His victory helped cap a successful campaign for the club, which finished fifth overall despite nearly 80 per cent of its contingent comprising young athletes competing for the first time.

Team Manager Adinata Apin said the achievement reflected encouraging progress for SFG, which was established in 2023.

“Finishing fifth overall is a proud achievement for all of us. This is part of our preparation for Saga next year.

“I hope this success will continue to unite SFG members as we strive for further achievements in this combat sport,” he said.

The tournament attracted 474 amateur and professional participants from 38 clubs — 36 from Sabah and one each from Sarawak and Labuan.

Guided by coaches Mohamad Rizal and Fadhil Mohd Fadzillah, SFG also made its mark in the professional division through MB Khairul Mohd Ariffin.

Khairul defeated his opponent from a Tawau team with a second-round stoppage, adding another highlight to the club’s medal haul.

While Mohd Subky demonstrated his ability against a younger rival, SFG’s youngest athlete, seven-year-old Mohd Khabib Yussuf, gained valuable experience in his own contest.

The SK Don Bosco pupil faced eight-year-old Adib Aziq of Tedung Muay Thai and lost narrowly on points.

Adinata said the competition provided an important platform for newcomers to test themselves and develop their abilities.

“Congratulations and thank you to the Sabah Muaythai Association for organising SME 2026, which gave new athletes with fewer than five bouts under their belts an opportunity to compete,” he said.

He hoped the experience and results would strengthen the team’s preparations for next year’s Sabah Games (Saga).
