Urgent recall of popular SuperValu food product due to sickness fears

An urgent recall has been issued for a batch of a popular SuperValu fish product due to concerns over illness. SuperValu Smoked Salmon 40g and SuperValu Smoked Salmon 150g with a use-by date of 17 October, 2026 over the presence of listeria monocytogenes. Listeria monocytogenes is a form of harmful, food-borne bacteria that causes listeriosis which, in healthy people, can result in mild flu-like symptoms or gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea. But in people who are more vulnerable, infection could be more severe and lead to serious complications. Those most vulnerable to listeria monocytogenes include pregnant women, infants, older people and those with weakened immune systems. The incubation period, which is the time between initial infection and first symptoms appearing, is on average three weeks but it can possibly range between three and 70 days. Ireland's Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) highlighted the recall on Sunday, October 11 and assured consumers that recall notices will be displayed at the point of sale. Retailers have been requested to remove the implicated products from sale and display point-of-sale recall notices clearly. Consumers have been urged not to eat the affected batches. In a statement, a SuperValu spokesperson said: "SuperValu are recalling SuperValu Smoked Salmon 40g & SuperValu Smoked Salmon 150g with a Use By Date of 17/10/2026 due to the presence of Listeria Monocytogenes. "If you have purchased Supervalu Salmon 40g or 150g with use by 17/10/2026, do not consume it. Return the product to the store of purchase for a full refund.
