Bensouda Pledges to Eradicate Poverty in The Gambia Within 10 Years

Talib Ahmed Bensouda, the mayor of Kanifing Municipality and presidential candidate of Coalition 2026, has pledged to eradicate poverty in The Gambia within 10 years, arguing that achieving such an ambitious goal would require visionary, honest, and disciplined leadership.
Speaking at a Coalition 2026 rally in Bati Ndarr, Upper Saloum Constituency, Mr. Bensouda said the country needed a fundamental transformation driven by leaders who understood the challenges facing Gambians and possessed the determination to address them.
“What we want is to eradicate poverty in The Gambia within ten years. That is the transformation we are calling for,” he said.

Mr. Bensouda emphasized that meaningful national development required more than political promises, saying effective leadership must be grounded in integrity, a clear vision, and an unwavering commitment to improving people’s lives.
He argued that leaders who lacked honesty and integrity would struggle to enforce discipline or implement the reforms necessary to bring about lasting economic and social change.
Turning to the issue of tribalism, Mr. Bensouda criticized President Adama Barrow’s response to tribal remarks made during his recent nationwide tour.
Although he welcomed the president’s eventual condemnation of tribalism, Mr. Bensouda said the intervention had come too late.
He maintained that Mr. Barrow should have publicly rejected the remarks when they first emerged rather than waiting until later in the tour to address them.
Mr. Bensouda reiterated that The Gambia needed leadership capable of promoting national unity while pursuing an ambitious development agenda focused on reducing poverty and improving living standards.
He presented his proposed 10-year poverty eradication target as a central objective of the political and economic transformation he hopes to pursue under a Coalition 2026 government.
