ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Attention thespians and barflies: You can enjoy Shakespeare’s “Hamlet” from the comfort of a brewery or a bar this month in the Albuquerque metro.
Duke City Repertory Theatre’s “Hamlet Bard Crawl” is underway at bars and breweries in the metro. The crawl touts itself for having “Serious Actors. No Director. One Rehearsal. In a Bar (and beyond).”
“Hamlet is a tragedy but… performing in bars is actually a little bit closer to the way the theatres were in Shakespeare’s time. Theatres were a little bit rowdier… more interactive,” said Amelia Ampuerno, of Duke City Repertory Theatre. “It was less about sitting in a dark space and like being quiet while a show happened and more about having the audience be like a part of what was happening.”
The shows star Kane Distler as Hamlet and Stafford Douglas and Claudius. These shows have been going on since 2017 as a way to transform the way audiences interact with Shakespeare’s works. However, they were nervous at first.
“But then audiences loved it. They show up, they pack the breweries, they’re here for that. They sell a lot of beverages, kitchens, sell a lot of food. So it’s good for us. It’s good for them,” Ampuerno said.
To attend, you must RSVP on their website . These are the shows they have coming up:
