GWERU – At least two houses burn down every month in the Midlands due to electrical faults primarily caused by substandard wiring and use of cheap, uncertified electrical components and appliances, the Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority (ZERA) has said.

ZERA Chief Engineer of Electricity Victor Sibanda said this during a two day Electricity Regulations Workshop held in Gweru on Monday and Tuesday.

The workshop sought to engage stakeholders on the new Electricity Regulations, providing clarity on regulatory requirements, compliance obligations, and electricity safety provisions. It also explored practical approaches to improving energy efficiency, reducing energy costs, and promoting sustainable energy use.

Sibanda said Gweru was recording the highest number of such incidents in the province, with the electrical faults resulting in loss of life.

He urged residents to seek the services of qualified electricians. Sibanda warned electricians to carry out their work properly as they would be held responsible where faulty connections resulted in damage or loss of life.

“Residents should engage qualified electricians and use approved electrical materials to reduce electrical-related fires.

“People should shun buying cheap material on the streets and do the needful. Life is being lost monthly due to substandard wiring,” said Sibanda.
