This is a problem for a club which reached the final twice in the last three seasons
Seven defeats in 12 Champions League matches, with all seven coming in their last eight games in Europe’s most prestigious competition, should set alarm bells ringing, especially given that Inter reached the final twice in the previous three years. After the match, Inter coach Cristian Chivu repeated the familiar phrase: “ I take full responsibility for the defeat .” That phrase has become banal, some would even call it a cliché, because it is never followed by any concrete acceptance of responsibility, whether through the drastic measure of resigning or by admitting specific mistakes.
Rather than simply taking responsibility, Chivu should have explained why his team had lost seven of their last eight Champions League matches or why they had conceded 14 goals in eight games across Serie A and the Champions League. After heavy defeats, such as Inter’s yesterday, the discussion should focus not on the consequences but on the causes — provided there is a genuine plan to correct the mistakes. Fortunately for Inter, nothing has been compromised just yet. The Nerazzurri can still finish in the top eight. Experience from the previous two Champions League campaigns shows that 16 points are enough to qualify directly for the round of 16, and it is not beyond Inter to record five wins and a draw across their next three matches. However, it is obvious that Chivu is struggling in the Champions League.
The so-called “English signings” have clearly failed to deliver what was expected of them, Barella, Dimarco and Zielinski have been far too inconsistent, Akanji is struggling with his role as a central defender, Diouf needs to pay more attention to his defensive duties, and Calhanoglu must shift up at least into fourth gear. Above all, Inter need to give Provedel a chance, allowing them time to look for a new goalkeeper in January if the former Lazio shot-stopper also fails to justify their trust.
Chivu is the first to realise that winning the Scudetto this season will not be enough to keep his job. He needs to make a deeper impact in the Champions League, because this Inter side demonstrates its greatness in Europe rather than in Italy, where it has by far the strongest squad. Chivu is not at risk of being sacked this season. After all, president Beppe Marotta is not in the habit of changing coaches mid-season. However, Inter’s elimination from the Champions League in January would mean a certain parting of ways in June.
