FEMD Seeks Training To Ease Reliance On NEMA
The Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Department (FEMD) has asked the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to train its personnel to strengthen emergency response and reduce its reliance on the federal agency.
The Director of FEMD, Engr. Muhammad Dikko, made the request during a courtesy visit to the NEMA Abuja Operations Office on Thursday.
Dikko said FEMD could provide data on emergencies in communities across the FCT to support timely response and relief operations.
He urged NEMA to equip FEMD personnel with the technical skills needed to handle emergencies more effectively.
“Train them on what they are expected to do. This will reduce the workload of NEMA,” he said.
Dikko stressed the need to build the capacity of FEMD personnel to improve emergency management and coordination between the two agencies.
Responding, the Head of Operations at the NEMA Abuja Operations Office, Mr Zakari Abubakar, said the agency was committed to working with FEMD to improve disaster management in the territory.
Abubakar said cooperation among emergency management agencies was necessary for effective disaster preparedness, response and recovery.
“Disaster management thrives on collaboration. No single agency does it alone,” he said.
He also said disaster management required continuous training and retraining to equip personnel with the knowledge and skills needed to carry out their duties.
Abubakar assured FEMD that NEMA would train its personnel as part of efforts to strengthen emergency response capacity in the FCT.
Management staff of both agencies attended the meeting.
