Carr: ‘Humble’ Hanekom the real deal

Bulls veteran Nizaam Carr believes Cameron Hanekom has all the attributes for a long and successful Springbok career.

The 24-year-old made a major impression for the Boks off the bench against the All Blacks in the Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry series and scored a brace of tries in the Bulls’ romp against the Lions at Loftus in the URC this past weekend.

Carr singled out Hanekom when former England internationals Dan Cole and Ben Youngs asked him to name a promising Bulls youngster on the For the Love of Rugby: South Africa podcast ahead of their opening Investec Champions Cup match against Stade Français at Loftus on Saturday.

“I think a guy who’s got a massive and bright future ahead of him is Cameron Hanekom,” Carr said. “He came off the bench for the Boks against the All Blacks.

“The way he just carries himself. And he’s such a good guy, humble guy, trying to absorb all the advice that’s been given to him.

“You’re not working with a guy who knows it all. As a youngster, it’s nice to work with somebody who actually listens to you. He doesn’t have to take everything on board, but you can actually see him trying what you explained to him to do in the game, and it works.”

Then came the list of attributes.

“Cameron’s got the physicality, the speed, he can chip kick a ball, he can step off both feet, he can jackal,” said Carr. “So I think he’s going to play for the Boks and obviously the Bulls for many years to come.”
