Man, 23, killed in crash near Island Lake

A man was killed in a crash near Island Lake early Thursday.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded to the intersection of West Dowell and West Neville roads around 1:35 a.m. Thursday “for an Audi S4 that crashed into the trees.”

The sheriff’s office said they found the driver was critically injured. He was identified as a 23-year-old man who lived in the Lake Villa area. He has not been named by authorities.

The car was split into several pieces and the driver was ejected, Lake County officials said, adding the vehicle was found 200 feet off the roadway and “had struck several trees.”

The man was taken to an area hospital and was pronounced dead there. The Lake County Coroner’s Office responded to the hospital and an autopsy is being scheduled for the driver, the the sheriff’s office said.

A preliminary investigation indicated the driver was clocked by a McHenry County Sheriff ’s deputy going 74 mph in a 35 mph zone. The radar reading came as the driver was heading east on Dowell Road and approaching Neville Road, Lake County authorities said. The intersection is on the Lake County side of the county line.

“As the McHenry County Deputy attempted to turn around, it appears the driver of the Audi accelerated and lost control of his vehicle,” Lake County authorities said.

The crash is being investigated the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Technical Crash Investigations Team.
