How we can measure our fitness progress

Seeing how much weight you can lift is just one way to measure your fitness. Anne McGee with AP Training shares alternative ways to measure your progress.

The first test measures balance. McGee said if you can firmly balance on one leg for about 30 seconds without swaying back and forth, that’s a good sign of strength.

“People, as they age, are really surprised that they can’t do it, but they get better immediately once you start to do that,” said McGee.

Another way to measure fitness is by taking your heart rate.

“If you have an average heart rate in the morning of, say below 50, you’re pretty excellent. You’re very efficient.”

Sit to Stand is another option. McGee said the goal is to cross or hold your arms in front of you, sit in a chair, and then stand up. If you’re able to do 10 of these in 14 seconds, that’s a good indicator of good leg strength.

The Wall Sit is similar. Sit with your back against a wall and squat, almost as if there’s a chair underneath.

“If you have a struggle up to 30 seconds, you probably could use a little more of that exercise. If you can hold it for, like, 60 seconds, you have pretty good leg strength.”

McGee said people can start strength training at any age.

“Everybody’s got a day one. Start from somewhere and if you don’t know what you’re doing, find someone that can help you.”
